2021 – A year in review

I’m never quite ready to jump fully into the new year until I have a moment to look back over the previous one.  Wanted to share this glimpse into what life and work looked like through my lens in 2021.  Photos shared are, of course, only a fraction of the work created during the year.

January

February

The ocean was our saving grace. With wet suits and boogie boards, we went to the beach with friends whenever we could.  Forgive the iphone photo, but the best camera for the moment is the one you have on you.

We continued to be home, a lot, and sometimes my dog, Cinnamon, was the only member of the household who was willing to be photographed. Good thing she’s so pretty.

March

Spring is always a great time for a rebrand. I particularly enjoyed taking portraits of this talented writer and dear friend.

April

Zoom school meant no school pictures, so I began to photograph your kids!  Hundreds of kids came to my outdoor studio set up in pop-up sessions that I held throughout the spring and it was a joy.  If you’d like to be notified when I offer these portrait sessions again, sign up here.

May

We had to move out of our home while it was being used as a filming location, which gave us the opportunity to spend time in Topanga Canyon. We hiked almost daily, and absolutely loved it, until we had to exit in rather dramatic fashion when the area our rental was in was evacuated due to a forest fire.  We first saw the smoke from the fire while on a hike.

We were happy to get home to Echo Park, where I jumped back into Kids’ Portrait pop-ups and family sessions.

June

At my last Kids’ Portrait session of the year, this father and daughter showed up in matching T-shirts, and were so cute that I had to break my own rule and have dad be in the picture too.

July

Family time in Vermont, and I committed to photographing my personal work almost entirely on film.

August

A brief stop in NYC, and then back to work in Los Angeles. I was particularly happy that I made it home in time to photograph this beautiful mama and her family, just days before she gave birth.

October

Where do I even begin? I photographed so many gorgeous families and expecting moms, also did a number of branding shoots with absolutely phenomenal women, both in Los Angeles, and in Joshua Tree, CA.

November

As I look back through my November shoots, what jumps out at me as so special, is that every single one of my families was a returning client. Some I had been photographing for years, others I had just recently begun to photograph, and were seeing again as part of my first year bundle.

December

On a personal note, this was a hard month. Our dog Comrade died. He was such a constant, warm, and patient presence to the very end. The house doesn’t feel the same without him.

But the sun still rises and sets each day, and we closed out the year with one of my favorite traditions – gathering on the beach to watch the last sunset of the year with friends. It’s impossible for me to end the year with anything but gratitude, as I watch the kids – covered in sand, twirling sparklers, faces plastered with the biggest smiles – while nature also puts on a spectacular show.

Feeling cautiously optimistic about what 2022 will bring. Reach out if you’re interested in working with me.
