What Makes a Family
Shortly after I launched this site, my sister posted this on her FB page –
When I was a little kid my sister used to dress me up using the copious amounts of dress up clothes my mother kept for us, I would add about 20 more necklaces, and she would pose me in the garden and take my picture for hours. It made me so happy and is pretty much still my life. Now she’s a documentary photographer and her work is featured here.
She lives in LA and you can book a session with her. She was the first person who taught me to respect trans people, the first family member I came out to as queer, and later poly, and the first who understood becoming fat positive would make me happier and why it’s important work to me. She has consistently supported me in dealing with being both mad and sick. What I’m saying is, you can trust her with all of these identities and the ways they could be a part of what it means for you and your life to be photographed.
I really don’t have words for how reading this moved me. It made me cry and feel deeply appreciative of the relationship I have with my sister and all that she has taught me. And I also wanted to do the work to make anyone who came to view my site on her recommendation feel like it was a place for them. I reached out to my community to offer free sessions to some families that identify as LGBTQ. I didn’t want to just say that I had an all inclusive concept of family, I wanted to show it.
All of these sessions deserve and will have complete blog posts of their own, but I also wanted to include a few of each family in one place all together. To the families included here: I am deeply grateful that you opened up your homes to me! It has truly been my pleasure to photograph you.
Be sure to check back for the full sessions!
As another year comes to a close, I’m sure you’re feeling the march of time and the constant evolution happening in your own family. Get in touch and let’s talk about capturing this moment.
